Colonel Kevin Brown

Colonel (Retired) Kevin “Red Eagle” Brown served 25 years as an Infantry leader in the United States Army, and recently retired as the Chairman of the Mohegan Tribe and Chairman of the Mohegan Tribal Gaming Authority. His father Michael Brown was a veteran of WWII, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. His mother, Tribal Nonner Pauline “Red Feather” Brown, was born on Mohegan Hill, just a few feet from the Tantaquidgeon Indian Museum on Mohegan Tribal Territory. After graduating from the United States Military Academy at West Point in 1987, Kevin led our nation's men and women in deployed environments at all levels : as a Platoon Leader with the 101st Airborne Division during Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm; as a Company Commander in the 1st Cavalry Division along the Iraqi border during Operation Southern Watch & Intrinsic Action, as a Battalion Executive Officer in the northern jungles of Thailand during Operation Cobra Gold, as a Battalion Commander in the 10th Mountain Division in Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom, and again as a Deputy Brigade Commander in the 10th Mountain Division in Kirkuk, Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom. He culminated his career as a Colonel commanding the Garrison at Fort Riley, Kansas, where he led holistic health efforts to sustain the resilience of highly-deployed Soldiers and their family members before retiring in 2011. He was awarded the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star (with 3 oak leaf clusters), the Combat Infantryman’s Badge (with Star for second Award), multiple other commendations, and is Airborne, Air Assault, Ranger and Senior Parachutist qualified. In 2013, Kevin was elected to the Mohegan Tribal Council and returned home to Uncasville and the Chairmanship of his tribe. In that role he was responsible for the well-being of the 2000 member Mohegan Tribe of Indians of Connecticut, and their commercial business arms: Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment and Mohegan Holdings. During his tenure, Mohegan Gaming and Entertainment expanded internationally, adding gaming licenses in Canada and South Korea. Kevin has a Bachelors of Science in Aerospace Engineering from West Point, a Master of Science in Operations Research from the Naval Postgraduate School, a Master of Arts in Public Diplomacy from Norwich University and is currently a PhD candidate in Security Studies from Kansas State University. He currently serves on the board of the National Archives Foundation in Washington DC, serves as a Strategic Advisor to Veterans and First Responders Healthcare, and was recently seated as the President and CEO of the United States Veterans Chamber of Commerce.
Brandee Izquierdo, MPA, PhD Candidate

Ms. Izquierdo’s drive and determination are built on making an impact within behavioral health, promoting long-term recovery, and ensuring communities are educated and have the tools necessary to combat the addiction epidemic. Before leading the SAFE Project team, Brandee worked for Faces & Voices of Recovery as the Director of Advocacy and Outreach. In addition, she served as the Associate Director of Special Populations with Behavioral Health System Baltimore and as the Director of Consumer Affairs for the state of Maryland’s Behavioral Health Administration. In these leadership roles, Brandee has led advocacy efforts to expand access to behavioral health services and recovery support services while providing technical assistance both nationally and internationally, empowering others within the recovery movement. Her ability to build relationships and bridge gaps within behavioral health, community services, and criminal justice have been a catalyst for global peer expansion. As a subject matter expert with Center for Social Innovation, Policy Research Associates, SAMHSA and the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC), Brandee has made vast contributions within behavioral health and within the recovery movement around public policy, outreach, and workforce development. Additionally, Brandee has made a significant impact within the judicial system, advocating for access to treatment and recovery and is the principle investigator of Maryland’s integrated-Forensic Peer Recovery Specialist curriculum. Brandee’s passion for service work and knowledge of recovery support services extends beyond behavioral health. With a master’s degree in Public Administration and a bachelor’s degree in Government and Public Policy, Brandee is currently working on her Doctorate in Public Administration with a specialization in Administration Justice.
Vickilynn Kimbro, MSN

Vickilynn Kimbro is the RN-Informatics specialist for Nursing Service working for the Director of Nursing Operations at VA Connecticut Healthcare Systems. She holds an MSN/Informatics degree from the University of Phoenix and a BSN from Southern Connecticut State University with memberships in AMIA, ANA, and STTI. Ms. Kimbro has completed the HI101 series and the AMIA 10x10 training offered by VA. Previous nursing positions include staff nurse at Midstate Medical Center ER, Baylor at Stratford Visiting Nurses Association, Supervisor of Clinical Services for Patient’s Choice Homecare of Trumbull and staff nurse VACHS PsychER. Her focus is on improved use of VA technology, particularly as it affects analytics, documentation, and conceptual approaches to training staff on applications. In this capacity, she was the project lead for the BioPoint ID Wristband implementation, was the national contact and lead for VACT’s VistA Scheduling GUI, is a SharePoint workflow developer for numerous VACT committees, and her passion is developing innovative training systems that further serve our veterans. Currently, she is the acting Facility Telehealth Program Coordinator and nurse manager for VA Connecticut. The program supports Home Telehealth (patient care assessed daily by a nurse monitor), Virtual Video Telehealth (Synchronous Provider to patient), Clinic Based Telehealth (Synchronous Facility based care), and Store and Forward (Asynchronous care). As a Veteran, she is dedicated to improving healthcare delivery to her fellow Veterans at VACT. Currently, she is developing nursing documentation to represent the patient experience more accurately while continuing to prompt the nurse for correct assessment. She has the honor of participating nationally as a SME for FFHITT and CPRS CWG.
Jaquel Patterson, ND, MBA

Dr. Jaquel Patterson, ND, MBA, is a highly experienced naturopathic physician and the medical director of Fairfield Family Health in Fairfield, Connecticut. Her practice focuses on Lyme disease, autoimmune conditions, chronic fatigue, allergies, and anxiety and depression. She’s also an expert in women’s health, children’s developmental disabilities, and PANS/PANDAS. Dr. Patterson’s passion for naturopathic medicine began at an early age as she grew up seeing the benefits of alternative healing practices. During her teen years, her mother struggled with lupus and rheumatoid arthritis. Dr. Patterson noticed that conventional treatments fell short, which fueled her passion for finding alternative options and instilled a desire to provide better care. After completing her undergraduate degree at Cornell University and working in the business field for several years, Dr. Patterson switched career paths and completed her doctoral degree at the University of Bridgeport, College of Naturopathic Medicine in Connecticut. Since then, she has practiced medicine with the core naturopathic tenet in mind: Treat the whole person and find the underlying cause of disease. Dr. Patterson’s approach is anything but traditional, as she aims to meet people where they’re at, partnering with them and empowering them to, as she says, “Get back to self.” She has purposefully created a practice that provides a comfortable and healing environment that supports her naturopathic beliefs. Dr. Patterson has extensive experience as a presenter nationally and locally, speaking on integrative medicine and pain management, chronic diseases, and autoimmune conditions at large forums such as A4M and AANP. She has appeared multiple times on Channel 12 news, Cablevision’s Health Talk, Bottom Line on Your Health, and Green Medics radio. She has also authored publications like Naturopathic Doctor News and Review, Real Simple magazine, and Under Armour. She has received specialized training in Lyme protocols with Dr. Lee Cowden and Klinghardt Academy. She is an active member of ILADS, MAPS, American Association of Environmental Medicine, AANP and CNPA. Dr. Patterson is the president of the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians. She also proudly serves in several professional positions, including co-chair for the Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services (DMHAS) Statewide Integrative Medicine Collaborative, the medical adviser for ZyCal Bioceuticals Healthcare, and as the community ambassador for the Lupus Foundation of America.

Martha Thompson, Psy.D

Martha Thompson completed both her doctorate and master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at Forest Institute of Professional Psychology in Springfield, MO. Dr. Thompson is the owner and lead clinician at Empower the Mind LLC. She provides outpatient mental health / drug and alcohol treatment, clinical training and consultation for professionals in the field. Dr. Thompson has worked in various community services agencies including addiction treatment, domestic violence shelters and jails. Dr. Thompson was awarded the 2013 Certified Professional of the Year Award by the PA Certification Board. In December 2016 she was elected to join the Board of Directors for the Certification Board. Over the last several years she has taught at Harrisburg Area Community College, Alvernia University and Lebanon Valley College. In addition to her academics and teaching she is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Certified Advanced Alcohol and Drug Counselor. She has completed Certifications for the American Academy of Pain Medicine in Pain Management and Biofeedback Certification International Alliance requirements in both Biofeedback and Neurofeedback EEG. Dr. Thompson is known for her energizing and engaging style. She is full of passion for the work she does and has an abundance of compassion for the people she works with.
Jana Wu, LCSW
Jana Wu is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and a Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor with a Master of Social Work. She is also on the Addictions Committee for the National Association of Social Workers of Connecticut. Jana specializes in treating Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, depression, anxiety, and co-occurring disorders. As a clinician at Mountainside, Jana implements Acceptance Commitment Therapy, Motivational Enhancement Treatment, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy to help her clients achieve emotional balance. She also draws from her extensive experience as a registered yoga teacher to incorporate mindfulness into her therapy sessions. In her free time, Jana enjoys practicing yoga and meditation with her family, traveling, and growing her own food.
Willpower for Veterans, Inc.
Donna is the mother of three children who resides in Connecticut. She lost her oldest child, William, an Army National Guard Veteran at the age of 24 on January 2, 2017 to suicide. Since losing her son, Donna started a 501 (c) 3 non-profit called WILL Power for Veterans Fund, Inc. Donna is dedicated to implement change and accountability within our broken system to better align and support our combat veterans. Our country loses, on average, 22 veterans every single day to suicide from their emotional wounds. Her mission is to build a retreat center for our veterans and first responders who serve our country and communities. It’s a way to give back to those who sacrifice so much for our country’s freedom. The vision is a no-charge stay, designed for small groups, who suffer in similar ways, to come together to bond and to heal. She is employed as the Director of Security Consultant Relations at ASSA ABLOY Door Security Solutions in New Haven.
